## About Quintessential

Quintessential is a calligraphic typeface that reproduces the Italic Hand as written with a broad-edged pen. The lowercase leans to the right and is narrow, with tall ascenders that end in angled pen cuts and descenders that taper to a point; letters do not join, but each begins and ends with the short entry and exit strokes of the pen. Capitals are roman forms with gently swelling strokes, Q has a long sweeping tail, and Z carries a crossbar. The official description places the style at the point where writing hands became quicker and more relaxed. The family consists of one Regular font, which already has the slant of an italic, and it is not a variable font. Its 371 glyphs cover Latin and Latin Extended. The designer credit is Astigmatic, and the copyright notice names Brian J. Bonislawsky. Quintessential is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Invitations and announcements**: Pen-cut strokes give names and dates the look of calligraphy written out by hand.
- **Certificates and diplomas**: Roman capitals with a calligraphic lowercase set a recipient's name in a formal but readable way.
- **Quotations and verse**: The unjoined italic letters stay legible over several lines, which a short poem or quotation needs.
- **Chapter titles in historical or fantasy books**: The Italic Hand model lends headings the tone of a manuscript.

## Things to know

- **One style with a built-in slant**: Quintessential has Regular 400 only. The lowercase is already italic in form, and there is no bold.
- **Letters are not connected**: Unlike a joined script, each letter stands alone, so spacing can be adjusted without breaking links.
- **Old-style figures**: The numerals have ascenders and descenders and do not align with the capitals.
- **Latin scripts only**: Latin and Latin Extended are covered. Cyrillic and Greek are not included.
