## About Phudu

Phudu is a display sans serif in capitals only: the lowercase keys return the same capital shapes. Dương Trần based it on the lettering that Vietnamese sign painters put on shop billboards, where Latin capitals were adapted and tone marks added by hand. The name comes from "phục dựng", Vietnamese for revival. The family is variable on one axis, weight, from 300 to 900, with seven named instances from Light to Black. The design links width to weight in an unusual way: the lighter the setting, the more extended the letters, which the designer intended to keep thin weights readable. In the specimen the Q carries its tail as a bar under the bowl and the @ sign is squared. Its 604 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese.

## Where it works

- **Shopfront and wayfinding signs**: The model is painted shop lettering, and capitals of one height read at a distance on fascias and boards.
- **Vietnamese-language headlines**: Stacked tone marks are part of the design brief, so accented capitals sit correctly in Vietnamese titles.
- **Posters with weight contrast**: Seven weights from Light 300 to Black 900 let one family set a thin date line against a black title.
- **Animated titles**: The weight axis can be driven continuously between 300 and 900 for motion graphics and web transitions.
- **Labels and menus**: Compact heavy capitals name products or dishes in a small area.

## Things to know

- **Capitals only**: Lowercase input is drawn as capitals, so Phudu cannot set mixed-case text.
- **Width changes with weight**: Lighter instances are more extended than heavy ones. A line may change length when its weight changes.
- **No italic**: The family has seven upright weights and no italic or slant axis.
- **No Cyrillic**: The files cover Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese; they do not contain Cyrillic letters.
