## About Pathway Extreme

Pathway Extreme is a sans serif family in the grotesque tradition, grown out of Pathway Gothic One, a narrow design, into a full variable family. At its default width the specimen shows the opposite of narrow: broad rounds with flattened sides, a wide a, e and o, horizontal stroke endings and an unconventional ampersand. Three axes shape it. Weight runs from 100 to 900 across nine named weights. Width runs from 75 to 100, so the letters can be squeezed back toward the proportions of the parent design. Optical size runs from 8 to 144, for tuning small text and large headlines separately. Upright and italic variable files give 18 styles. The fonts hold 725 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. Eduardo Tunni is the designer, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **One family from caption to banner**: The optical size axis spans 8 to 144, so the same fonts can be tuned for footnotes and for very large titles.
- **Headlines that must fit a column**: Dropping the width axis toward 75 narrows a heading until it fits the measure.
- **Interface text**: Nine weights from Thin to Black give labels, body text and emphasis distinct steps.
- **Brand systems**: With 18 styles and three axes, a single family can cover a brand's signage, web and print needs.
- **Vietnamese and European text**: The glyph set includes the letters for Vietnamese as well as languages such as Turkish, Polish and Czech.

## Things to know

- **Defaults are Thin and optical size 8**: The variable files default to weight 100 and optical size 8, so set the weight you want explicitly in CSS or in your design tool.
- **Width only narrows**: The width axis runs from 75 to 100; 100 is the widest setting.
- **Variable files only**: The package holds one upright and one italic variable font. Static instances come from the official source.
