## About Mr De Haviland

Mr De Haviland is a script typeface with thin strokes, a strong rightward slant and a very small lowercase beside tall, looping capitals. It belongs to the Charles Bluemlein Script Collection: according to the official notes, Bluemlein gathered signatures, built complete alphabets from them and gave the results fictitious names, which the digital versions keep. Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos redrew the scripts as expanded fonts. The lowercase joins into a continuous line, with long looped ascenders and descenders, and the numerals are slanted and much larger than the lowercase. The family has one Regular style and is not a variable font. Its 234 glyphs cover the basic Latin set. The font is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 with Mr De Haviland as a Reserved Font Name.

## Where it works

- **Wedding invitations**: Hairline strokes and looping capitals set the couple's names in the manner of a formal handwritten signature.
- **Signature lines**: The design grew out of real signatures, so a name set in it reads as a signed line on certificates and letters.
- **Monograms and initials**: Capitals are far larger than the lowercase and carry wide loops, which turns two or three initials into a motif.
- **Short display lines on cards**: A few words at a large size leave room for the long ascenders and descenders.

## Things to know

- **Very small lowercase**: In the specimen the lowercase is a fraction of the capital height, so the font needs large sizes to stay readable.
- **Capitals are not for all-caps setting**: A row of capitals in the specimen overlaps into a tangle; they are drawn to begin a word.
- **Basic Latin only**: The subset is Latin; Latin Extended is not covered.
