## About Molengo

Molengo is a sans serif typeface designed for documents. Its letters follow handwriting proportions instead of a rigid geometric scheme: in the specimen the strokes swell and thin slightly, the a and g are two-storey forms, the Q has a short curved tail and the numerals are old-style figures with ascenders and descenders. The official notes describe the face as multilingual and point to its placement of non-spacing marks, a feature that some minority languages need in order to stack accents on letters. The family has one Regular style with 372 glyphs and is not a variable font. The same notes say it was produced with FontForge and hinted with Xgridfit. Denis Jacquerye is the designer, and the font is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Letters and reports**: Molengo was made for documents, and its open humanist shapes read plainly in a short page of text.
- **Text with stacked accents**: Positioning for non-spacing marks lets a combining accent be placed on a base letter where no precomposed character exists.
- **Captions and labels**: Old-style figures sit at lowercase height, so numbers in a caption do not shout.
- **Understated headings**: The lightly modulated strokes give a heading a quiet, written quality at larger sizes.

## Things to know

- **One weight only**: There is no bold and no italic, so emphasis and hierarchy need size, colour or a second family.
- **Old-style figures**: The numerals in the specimen vary in height. That suits prose more than tables of aligned numbers.
- **Precomposed coverage is Western European**: The complete language sets are Western European ones; French lacks only the rare capital Ÿ.
