## About Markazi Text

Markazi Text is a text typeface that joins an Arabic design to a Latin serif drawn to accompany it. The Arabic, designed by Borna Izadpanah with Fiona Ross as design director, has moderate stroke contrast and follows an earlier Arabic typeface by Tim Holloway, who encouraged the work; Gerry Leonidas started the project as a collaboration between the University of Reading and Google. Florian Runge's Latin echoes the Arabic. In the specimen its letters are compact, with a tall x-height, short ascenders and descenders, sturdy bracketed serifs and an even rhythm, so it looks small for its point size. The family is one variable file with a weight axis from 400 to 700 and four named weights: Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold. There is no italic. Its 1,229 glyphs cover Arabic, Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese.

## Where it works

- **Arabic and Latin in one document**: Both scripts were designed as counterparts, so reports, catalogues and websites that mix them keep a shared weight and rhythm.
- **Long articles**: Moderate contrast and compact proportions were chosen for continuous reading in print and on screen.
- **Headlines in the heavier weights**: SemiBold and Bold give titles and subheads more colour without leaving the family.
- **Space-saving columns**: Short ascenders and descenders let lines sit close together in narrow newspaper-style columns.

## Things to know

- **No italic**: Markazi Text has four upright weights only. There is no italic file or slant axis.
- **Nothing lighter than Regular**: The weight axis starts at 400 and ends at 700.
- **Looks small at a given size**: The compact Latin sets smaller than most text serifs, so expect to raise the font size a step or two.
