## About Maitree

Maitree is a serif family for Latin and Thai whose name is the Thai word for friendliness. Its Latin letters are wide, with long flat serifs and terminals that curve unevenly, which the specimen shows most clearly in the a, r and y. The Thai is of the looped kind, and the official notes describe its loop terminals as larger than usual and the placement of vowels and tone marks as carefully managed for readability. Six upright weights run from ExtraLight 200 to Bold 700; there are no italics and no variable font. Each file holds 765 glyphs covering Thai, Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets. Cadson Demak, a Thai type foundry, leads the project, and the fonts are published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Thai and English publications**: Thai and Latin were drawn together, so bilingual pages keep one texture across both scripts.
- **Text with a historical flavour**: The official notes recommend the asymmetric terminals for work that calls for an antique manner, such as heritage and museum material.
- **Magazine headings**: ExtraLight and Light show off the long serifs at large sizes, while SemiBold and Bold give compact, dark titles.
- **Body copy in reports**: Regular and Medium have wide, open letters that stay clear in running text.

## Things to know

- **No italics**: Maitree has six upright weights and no italic style.
- **Similar Thai letters**: The notes warn that some Thai glyph pairs look alike, which can cause confusion in very short texts.
- **Wide set**: The letters are broad, so Maitree takes more line length than a narrow text serif at the same size.
