## About IM Fell English SC

IM Fell English SC is a serif typeface that sets small capitals in place of lowercase letters. Its outlines are intentionally irregular: in the specimen the edges wobble, serifs differ from letter to letter, and strokes thicken unevenly, reproducing the impression of worn metal type on paper instead of a cleaned-up drawing. Figures are old-style, and the capital Q and R end in long tails. The official text is a history of the Fell Types: John Fell, Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford, gathered types from France, Holland and Germany for a learned press from 1668 onwards, employed Peter de Walpergen as his type-founder, and on his death in 1686 left the collection to the University of Oxford. Igino Marini is the designer of this digital font. One Regular style is supplied, with 357 glyphs that include the letters for Polish, Czech, Turkish and Romanian.

## Where it works

- **Titles in historical books**: Small caps with the texture of early printing suit title pages and chapter heads for history and literature.
- **Theatre programmes and period posters**: Uneven outlines and long-tailed Q and R evoke seventeenth-century playbills and broadsides.
- **Labels with an antique look**: Spirits, tea and apothecary-style packaging can borrow the worn letterpress impression.
- **Maps and props for games**: Place names and document props gain an aged look without any image processing.
- **Headings above Fell text**: Small-cap headings match body copy set in the roman of the same Fell design.

## Things to know

- **No lowercase**: Lowercase keys give small capitals; the full capitals are taller.
- **Roughness is deliberate**: The irregular edges are part of the outlines and become obvious at large sizes.
- **One style, old-style figures**: There is only Regular 400, and the numerals have ascenders and descenders.
