## About Honk

Honk is a display typeface that translates the loud, decorated lettering of Indian trucks into a colour font. Each letter is a square, blocky shape with clipped corners, set inside a frame; the official notes describe a modular system of ten different styles, with their own shadows and colour palettes. The colours are stored in COLRv1 and CPAL tables. Two variable axes change the drawing: Morph, from 0 to 45, shifts the letter shapes, and Shadow Length, from 0 to 100, extends a shadow behind them. There is one Regular style and no italic. The font holds 3,058 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended, and the notes mention emoji as well. Ek Type designed and engineered the project: Noopur Datye and Yesha Goshar are the designers, Sidharth Jaishankar and Girish Dalvi the engineers. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Event and festival posters**: Built-in colours, frames and shadows deliver a finished title straight from the font.
- **Animated titles**: The Morph and Shadow Length axes can be animated, so a word changes shape or grows a shadow in motion graphics and on the web.
- **Social media graphics**: A single word in Honk fills a square post with colour without further artwork.
- **Shop and food-stall signage**: The lettering comes from hand-painted vehicle signs and carries that street character to menus and boards.

## Things to know

- **Colour depends on COLRv1 support**: Honk stores its colours in COLRv1 and CPAL tables. The specimen on this page is rendered in one colour; the full palettes appear only in software that reads COLRv1.
- **Two custom axes, no weight axis**: The variable axes are Morph (0 to 45, default 15) and Shadow Length (0 to 100, default 0). Weight is fixed at Regular 400.
- **A large file**: With 3,058 glyphs and colour layers, the variable TTF is about 3.7 MB.
