## About Grenze

Grenze is a serif family in which the proportions of a Roman text face meet the broken curves of blackletter. In the specimen the bowls of a, e and o are cut into angled facets, joins in n and r meet the stem at a sharp corner, and the serifs are short and wedge-like. The letters are fairly narrow, and the figures are old-style, with 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 dropping below the line. According to the official notes Grenze was first designed for magazine use. The family is a variable font on a weight axis from 100 to 900, with nine named weights from Thin to Black and an italic for each, 18 styles. It holds 782 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese, is credited to Omnibus-Type, and is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Magazine features**: Grenze was first drawn for magazines: Regular and Medium with their italics carry text, and Black handles the headline.
- **Headlines with an edge**: Faceted bowls and sharp joins become clearly visible in the ExtraBold and Black weights at large sizes.
- **Book covers and titles**: The blackletter angles give a title a historical note while the Roman structure keeps each letter familiar.
- **Pull quotes and standfirsts**: Italics exist for all nine weights, so a quote can be set light, regular or heavy in the same family.
- **Editorial pages in Vietnamese**: The 782 glyphs include the Vietnamese character set next to Latin Extended.

## Things to know

- **Two variable files**: The download holds one variable file for the upright styles and one for the italics, each covering weights 100 to 900.
- **Old-style figures in the specimen**: The numerals shown vary in height like lowercase letters, which matters in tables and prices.
- **Latin scripts only**: Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese are covered. Cyrillic and Greek are not included.
