## About Fragment Mono

Fragment Mono is a monospaced typeface for programming in the neo-grotesque manner: strokes are even, terminals are cut horizontally, and curves are tight and closed. Wei Huang built it by adapting Nimbus Sans, a sans serif by URW Design Studio, to a fixed character width and extending its character set. The changes that code requires are visible in the specimen: the zero carries a slash, the lowercase l has a curved foot, i and j have horizontal bars, and r stands on a base stroke so that narrow letters fill their cell. Punctuation and brackets are large. The family consists of Regular 400 and its italic, two styles, with no bold, and it is not a variable font. The 707 glyphs cover Latin and Latin Extended. Fragment Mono is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and the copyright notice names The Fragment-Mono Project Authors.

## Where it works

- **Code editors**: A slashed zero and a footed l separate the characters that are easily confused in source code.
- **Comments in italic**: The family includes a real italic, so themes that set comments or keywords in italics do not rely on a slanted regular.
- **Code blocks in documentation**: Its plain grotesque shapes sit quietly next to a sans serif text face in technical articles.
- **Labels in technical layouts**: Fixed-width letters align coordinates, version numbers and captions in diagrams and specification sheets.

## Things to know

- **No bold**: Fragment Mono has Regular and Italic only. Syntax themes that call for bold get a synthesised one or none.
- **Two static files**: Regular and Italic are separate fonts; there is no variable version.
- **Latin scripts only**: Latin and Latin Extended are covered. Cyrillic is not present in the fonts.
