# Minimalist sans-serif fonts

> Quiet, low-contrast sans-serif families with plain shapes and open spacing, for portfolios, product pages and calm editorial layouts.

Minimalist typography is less about a typeface than about everything around it: one family, two or three sizes, a lot of white space. But some typefaces suit that discipline better than others. The ones that do share a temperament. They are low in contrast, regular in rhythm, free of eccentric letters, and usually on the light side, so that a page of them looks like an even pale gray.

The risk in choosing a quiet face is blandness, and the difference between calm and dull lies in small things. Look at spacing first: minimalist layouts magnify it, and a family with open, even letter spacing looks composed where a tight one looks cramped. Look at the lighter weights, which will do most of the work, and make sure they stay legible at your text size. Then look for one modest distinguishing trait, such as a single-story a, unusually round bowls or a tall x-height, which gives the design a voice without raising it.

Several families below exist in a single weight. That can be a feature in this style, since restraint is the point, but a second weight for emphasis makes life easier.

How these were chosen: Sans-serif families tagged minimalist: light to regular, low-contrast designs with plain construction; single-weight families are marked.

## FAQs

### What makes a font minimalist?

Plain construction, low stroke contrast, even rhythm and no decorative details. The layout does the rest: few sizes, few weights and generous space.

### Can a minimalist site use just one font weight?

Yes, by relying on size, spacing and color for hierarchy. A second weight for emphasis and navigation is still convenient.

### Are these fonts free for commercial websites?

Yes. Every family here is under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use, self-hosting and modification.
