## About Doto

Doto is a display typeface made of dots: each character is a pattern of small separate marks on a grid, like the output of a dot-matrix printer or an LED sign. In the specimen the dots are square, capitals such as D and I carry small slab-like feet, and narrow letters such as i and l take up as much room as wide ones. The family is a variable font with two axes. Weight runs from 100 to 900 across nine named weights, Thin to Black, and changes the size of each dot, so the light end looks like a faint trace and the heavy end like a solid matrix. Roundness runs from 0 to 100. The font holds 320 glyphs covering Latin and Latin Extended, with no italic. Óliver Lalan is credited as the designer.

## Where it works

- **Readout-style titles**: Letters formed from a dot grid give a heading the look of a departure board, a ticker or a printed receipt.
- **Counters and timers**: Numerals drawn on the same grid as the letters suit scores, countdowns and large statistics.
- **Animated weight changes**: The 100 to 900 weight axis grows or shrinks every dot, which can be animated to make a word fade in.
- **Square or softened dots**: The Roundness axis, from 0 to 100, changes the shape of the dots without changing the letterforms.
- **Tech and electronics branding**: A short product name in dot-matrix letters points to hardware, displays and code.

## Things to know

- **Two axes in one file**: The download is one variable font with a weight axis (100 to 900) and a Roundness axis (0 to 100).
- **Dots need size**: At small sizes, and especially in the light weights, the separate dots thin out until the letters are hard to make out.
- **No italic**: Doto has nine upright weights and no slanted style.
