## About Coiny

Coiny is a display typeface whose Latin and Tamil letters were designed side by side. Every stroke is thick and ends in a full round, as if painted with a blunt, round-tipped brush; the official notes link the shapes to the informal lettering found on city streets. In the specimen the counters are small ovals, the capital C curls in on itself, the x-height is tall and the letters are built from simple geometric forms. The family has one style, labelled Regular although it is very heavy, and it is not a variable font. Its 731 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Vietnamese and Tamil. Marcelo Magalhães, who works as a type designer in São Paulo, leads the project, and the font is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Titles in Tamil and Latin**: Both scripts share one design, so a bilingual headline keeps the same weight and rounded endings on each line.
- **Children's products and games**: Thick strokes and round ends give short words a soft, toy-like look on covers, packaging and app screens.
- **Posters and shop-front graphics**: The design takes its cue from street lettering and holds a large area of colour at poster size.
- **Stickers, badges and thumbnails**: Heavy letters with small counters stay recognisable when a word is set over a photo or a busy background.

## Things to know

- **One weight, and it is heavy**: The single style is named Regular 400 but looks like a black weight. There is no lighter companion.
- **Counters close up when small**: The openings inside a, e and o are small in the specimen, so the face needs size to stay readable.
- **Tamil is included**: Coiny carries a Tamil character set in the same file as Latin and Vietnamese.
