## About Cambay

Cambay is a sans serif family created to give Devanagari a libre typeface that harmonises with the Latin Cantarell. Pooja Saxena, who works in Bangalore, leads the project. Its four styles are Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic; the official notes describe the slanted styles as obliques that received only the optical corrections they could not do without, so they are sloped romans, not separately drawn cursives. The Latin letters in the specimen are humanist in build: open apertures in a, c and e, a single-storey g, low stroke contrast and a generous x-height. The fonts contain 924 glyphs across the Devanagari, Latin and Latin Extended subsets, so one family can set a document that mixes both scripts. Cambay is a static family, not a variable font, and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Bilingual Hindi and English pages**: Devanagari and Latin share one design, so mixed-script paragraphs keep the same weight and rhythm.
- **Interface text in two scripts**: Open apertures and low contrast in the Latin letters keep labels legible, and Bold marks active states.
- **Documents with emphasis**: Regular, Bold and their obliques provide the four styles a word processor expects for body copy.
- **Companion to Cantarell**: Projects that already use Cantarell for Latin can add Cambay for Devanagari without a visual break.

## Things to know

- **Obliques, not true italics**: The italic files are slanted versions of the upright styles with minimal optical correction.
- **Two weights**: Only Regular 400 and Bold 700 exist; there is no light or medium step between them.
- **Static files**: Cambay ships as four separate TTF files and has no variable axis.
