## About Bitcount Single

Bitcount Single is a display face made of dots: each letter is plotted on a coarse grid, the way characters appear on a matrix display or a needle printer. Weight changes the size of the dots rather than the skeleton. At Thin 100 they are pinpricks with air between them, around Regular they touch, and at Black 900 they merge into solid, lumpy strokes. The variable file has five axes: Weight from 100 to 900, Slant from 0 to −8, Cursive, and two custom ones named Element Expansion and Element Shape, each running from 0 to 100. Nine named weights, upright and slanted, give 18 styles. The font holds 1,701 glyphs in Latin and Latin Extended character sets. Petr van Blokland is credited as designer and TYPETR as manufacturer, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Titles for games and electronic music**: Dotted letters recall arcade score boards and LED tickers, and the Black weight fills them in for a heavy logo line.
- **Departure-board and ticker graphics**: Each character sits on the same dot grid, so rows of text look like a matrix display in motion graphics.
- **Animated type**: Because weight scales the dots, animating the axis from 100 to 900 makes a word swell from points into solid letters.
- **Posters at large sizes**: At poster scale the separate dots of the Thin and Light weights become a pattern in their own right.
- **Receipts, tickets and labels as a motif**: Regular 400 gives the dotted print of a till roll for packaging or editorial illustration.

## Things to know

- **Light weights vanish when small**: Thin and ExtraLight are rows of tiny separate dots in the specimen; they need large sizes or high-resolution output to stay visible.
- **Custom axes are set by tag**: Element Expansion and Element Shape are addressed as ELXP and ELSH through font-variation-settings; both default to 0.
- **Slant comes from an axis**: There is no separate italic file. The slanted styles use the Slant axis, which goes to −8.
