## About BioRhyme

BioRhyme is a slab serif family for the Latin script designed by Aoife Mooney. Its letters are broad, with serifs drawn as flat rectangular blocks almost as thick as the stems, and the specimen shows a few idiosyncratic shapes: a z whose top stroke bends like a wave, curly braces that wriggle, and a Q with a tail that crosses the bowl. The family once existed as two separate families, a normal and an expanded width. According to the official notes it was reworked in September 2023 into one variable font with two axes, weight from 200 to 800 and width from 100 to 125. Seven named weights run from ExtraLight to ExtraBold, with no italics. The single variable file holds 494 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Headlines with a wide stance**: Pushing the width axis towards 125 stretches a short headline across a column without changing the font size.
- **Brand typography**: The wave-topped z and block serifs give a wordmark details that are easy to recognise.
- **Editorial display and subheads**: Seven named weights from ExtraLight to ExtraBold cover decks, subheads and drop quotes in one family.
- **Posters and covers**: ExtraBold at the expanded width fills a format with a few dark, wide words.
- **Responsive web headings**: One variable file lets width tighten on narrow screens and open up on wide ones.

## Things to know

- **Two axes in one file**: The download is a single variable font with a weight axis from 200 to 800 and a width axis from 100 to 125.
- **No italics**: BioRhyme has upright styles only.
- **The expanded width is now an axis**: According to the official notes, the former separate expanded family was folded into BioRhyme in September 2023; use the width axis to reach it.
