## About Arya

Arya is a sans serif family for Devanagari and Latin in which stroke contrast does the work that serifs do elsewhere. Vertical stems are thick, while the arches of n and m, the bowls and the horizontal bars thin sharply where they meet the stems, a pattern clear in the specimen's lowercase and numerals. According to the official notes the Devanagari began as a design numbered 1201 from Modular InfoTech and was smoothed for this release, and the Latin was drawn new to match it in weight and size. The family has two styles, Regular and Bold, with 806 glyphs each. Eduardo Tunni, a designer based in Buenos Aires, leads the project, and the name table credits Eduardo Rodriguez Tunni together with Modular Infotech.

## Where it works

- **Hindi and English headings**: The Latin was drawn to match the Devanagari in weight and size, so mixed-script titles keep an even colour.
- **Magazine and news titles**: Thick stems against thin joins give a sans serif headline some of the sparkle of a contrasted serif.
- **Pull quotes and standfirsts**: Regular at medium sizes shows the contrast without the weight of the Bold.
- **Brand names in two scripts**: A name can be written in Devanagari and Latin using the same two weights.

## Things to know

- **Two styles, no italic**: Arya consists of Regular and Bold. Emphasis has to come from the Bold, since no italic exists.
- **Thin joins at small sizes**: The joins and horizontals are much thinner than the stems, a contrast drawn to be seen at heading sizes.
- **Static fonts**: Arya is supplied as two static files and is not a variable font.
