## About Almendra

Almendra is a serif typeface built on calligraphy, with a style that the official notes relate to chancery and gothic hands. Strokes look cut with a broad pen: curves break into angles, stems lean slightly, and terminals end in wedge shapes. In the specimen the capital A carries a top bar that overhangs to the left, the numerals are old-style figures that rise and drop around the lowercase, and the Bold is markedly darker and more compact. The notes say the design was meant for long texts, particularly literature for young children, and that its details come forward at very large sizes. The family has two weights, Regular 400 and Bold 700, each with an italic, four styles in total, and is not a variable font. Each font has 368 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended. Ana Sanfelippo designed Almendra, published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Children's storybooks**: The design was intended for young readers' literature, and its pen-made shapes give running text a fairy-tale tone.
- **Fantasy and historical titles**: Angular curves and wedge terminals from gothic and chancery writing suit book covers, maps and game titles.
- **Chapter openings**: Bold at a large size shows the calligraphic details that are hidden at text sizes.
- **Menus and labels with a handmade tone**: Old-style figures sit among lowercase letters, so prices and dates blend into a line.
- **Text with emphasis**: Italics for both weights allow stressed words and titles inside a paragraph.

## Things to know

- **Old-style figures**: The default numerals have ascending and descending shapes instead of lining up at capital height.
- **Sister families are separate**: The official notes mention Small Cap and Display companions; they are separate families and not part of this download.
- **Roman structure, gothic details**: The gothic influence shows in angles and terminals, but the letters keep roman shapes and read as a serif face, not as a blackletter.
